Our History

Founders’ Story

Eng. Cromwell Kebenei | Co-Founder, Transformative Engineers Foundation (TEF)

Transformative Engineers Foundation (TEF) emerged from years of lived experience, personal commitment, and practical community work led by Eng. Cromwell Kebenei, who moved to Germany in 2010, pursued his studies there, and now works and lives in Germany with his family and two children. Born in Kenya and now holding German nationality, he brings a deep understanding of both countries in both mind and heart, shaped by lived experience, cross-cultural engagement, and a lasting commitment to building bridges between Kenya and Germany. Over time, this journey expanded through active engagement in communities in Kenya and through partnerships connecting the two countries.

The foundation was established by individuals who had already been deeply involved in supporting education, mentoring young people, improving access to water, promoting clean energy, strengthening community resilience, and connecting local needs with international cooperation. Their efforts also included acquiring used hospital and medical equipment and sending it to Kenya to support under-resourced hospitals and improve access to essential healthcare services.

TEF was not created as an abstract idea. It was born out of real service, real challenges, and a shared conviction that sustainable change requires both compassion and structure.

Among the key driving forces behind this journey, led by Eng. Cromwell Kebenei, are Eng. Thomas Cheruiyot, Joseph Kipkogei, Francisca Jemtai, and Dipl.-Kfm. Bernd Nussbickel of Germany, who sadly passed away in November 2025. From the very beginning, this founding team brought together complementary strengths in engineering, project implementation, finance and controlling, operations management, community engagement, and cooperation with educational institutions and public authorities.

Together, their technical expertise, social commitment, and organizational vision helped shape TEF into a mission-driven, accountable, and community-centered non-profit organization. Transformative Engineers Foundation (TEF) was officially registered in Kenya on 5 September 2025 under Registration No. NGO-JDUMBK6.

The story of Eng. Cromwell Kebenei is deeply connected to mentorship, innovation, and a long-standing commitment to supporting people through education and practical opportunity. Over many years, he has accompanied students and young adults in Kenya, Germany, and beyond, offering guidance in study transitions, examinations, time management, career planning, applications, and scholarship pathways. His support has not been limited to advice; it has also included consistent personal investment in people’s futures. He has helped sustain access to education for children and young people by supporting school fees and basic needs, and he has continued to assist students in Kenya directly from his own resources. His work reflects a belief that education is one of the strongest foundations for dignity, self-reliance, and long-term transformation.

Over the years, his engagement and support for communities grew far beyond isolated personal acts of assistance. What began as direct voluntary support gradually expanded across several counties in Kenya and reached public institutions, schools, hospitals, and vulnerable communities with increasing needs. As this engagement continued to grow in scope and responsibility, it became increasingly difficult to sustain it solely through private salary income. It was no longer realistic for Eng. Cromwell Kebenei to continue financing such a broad and expanding range of community interventions from his own earnings while at the same time pursuing his professional responsibilities, family life, and voluntary service. The scale of the work had grown beyond what one individual, however committed, could reasonably carry alone.

This reality made it clear that, in order for the good work already started in communities to continue and grow sustainably, there was a need to establish a formal foundation in Kenya. Such a structure would make it possible to attract support from private companies, foundations, organizations, religious institutions, and other well-wishers who share the same commitment to human dignity, opportunity, and sustainable development. Creating the foundation was therefore not only a legal or organizational step, but a necessary response to the growing scale of community needs and the desire to ensure continuity, accountability, and long-term impact.

The establishment of TEF has made it possible for Eng. Cromwell Kebenei to continue pursuing his career as an Industrial Engineer and Business Administrator in Germany, while at the same time remaining actively committed to meaningful community work through a stronger and more sustainable institutional framework. With the support of co-founders, employers, partners, and collaborators, the work can now continue in a more organized, transparent, and impactful way, ensuring that voluntary service is no longer dependent only on personal sacrifice, but is supported by shared responsibility and broader partnerships.

His contribution also extends strongly into environmental action, clean energy, and water access. Tree planting, school energy support, efficient stoves, and borehole-related work all became part of a broader commitment to improving daily life in practical and measurable ways. The work was shaped by close contact with communities and a clear understanding that sustainable development must respond to real conditions on the ground. In this sense, the founders’ journey was never limited to one theme alone. It naturally connected education, environment, energy, water, and community wellbeing because these realities are interconnected in people’s lives.

A major dimension of this founding journey is the vision for innovation-led development. This can be seen in the long-term energy and innovation work associated with Moi University, where a broader concept was developed around renewable energy, research, training, and technology transfer. The underlying idea was not only to install infrastructure, but to create systems that build knowledge, expand opportunity, strengthen institutions, and generate long-term value for communities and learners. This reflects one of the central ideas behind TEF itself: that engineering and innovation should serve society in practical, inclusive, and forward-looking ways.

Eng. Thomas Cheruiyot’s story reflects the same founding spirit through hands-on technical leadership and close work with communities facing urgent needs. His experience in solar energy, borehole and water systems, and irrigation projects helped reveal how quickly livelihoods, education, and health can be affected when infrastructure fails or is absent. His work has included technical support in rural and school settings, responses to energy shortages, assistance to drought-affected smallholder farmers, and the development of water supply solutions in underserved areas. His practical involvement under demanding field conditions helped shape TEF’s emphasis on solutions that are not only visionary, but workable, resilient, and rooted in local realities.

What unites the founders is a shared recognition that privately supported efforts, however meaningful, are not enough on their own to meet the scale of the challenges communities face. Over time, it became clear that there was a need for an institutional platform that could preserve experience, strengthen governance, improve transparency, support partnerships, and scale impact beyond isolated interventions. TEF was therefore established as the next step: a structured and values-based organization capable of turning years of personal commitment into sustainable programs with long-term reach.

The founders envisioned TEF as a platform where local ownership, technical quality, ethical governance, and international cooperation could come together. They wanted an organization that empowers communities not only through direct support, but also through knowledge, training, innovation, and partnership. Their vision was to create a foundation that responds to immediate human needs while also investing in systems that make communities stronger over time. This includes strengthening education, health, food security, clean energy, equality, innovation, and climate resilience as interconnected pillars of sustainable development.

Today, the founders’ story remains embedded in TEF’s identity. It is a story of service before structure, action before recognition, and commitment before visibility. It is a story built on years of mentoring, project support, technical problem-solving, community relationships, and cross-border collaboration. Most importantly, it is a story of choosing to move from isolated acts of help toward a lasting institution dedicated to measurable, transparent, and transformative impact. That founding spirit continues to guide TEF’s work and its commitment to empowering communities for a more just, resilient, and sustainable future.
